Firefighter Pfister

I had an idea to preserve and share audio recordings from my father-in-law about his time serving as a Captain on the San Diego Fire Department. They ranged from heart-breaking personal tragedies and accidents to hilarious and silly moments. I have always admired the ability of firefighters to operate within the crossroads of human experience with such humility and compassion. His stories are a reflection of that.

See it Live

Challenge

The audio files were poor quality due to the tapes beginning to degrade. They required a lot of manipulation to be properly listened to. There also were not a lot of contemporary pictures to work with. Firefighters tended to not carry cameras around!

Solution

I transcribed all of the audio files and lightly edited them for editorial clarity and to remove tangents. This allowed me to share the stories in written and audio formats. Luckily, some of the images I did have to work with were really good. They became the marquee pictures for the site and were supported by the rest. Some compromises had to be made with the design at the time, as Figma had just released it’s Sites tool, but I was determined to use it.

Results

Anyone can listen to, or read the shared history and stories of Firefighter Pfister!
